I am curious to know whether Google crawls links on 404 custom page?

No Google does not crawl links on 404 custom page. Only check the page is working properly or not. If anyone searches for non existing page, then he should taken to the 404 custom page.

If the page no longer exists, make sure that the server returns a 404 (Not Found) or 410 (Gone) HTTP status code. This will tell Google that the page is gone and that it should no longer appear in search results.

Yes and you can test it by creating a page that is linked from nowhere else and then check your logs or analytics

Google doesn't crawl 404 error page. If any link that has this error then your google webmaster setup warn you about this.

If the header response status is 404, Google will not crawl the page.
This is because URL does not exists

OK I got you. This means that I don't have to bother adding links to my custom 404 page, case they won't get picked up anyways.

Not all 404 error pages provide a 404 header status. This status simply translates, to search engines bots and other bots, as “page not found.” For example, Google uses this server header status when removing outdated and removed pages in your website. Suppose you are deleting 30 URLs; these 30 URLs now return a 404 header status. When Googlebot re-crawls these pages and notices that they are now returning 404 not found, it will only be a matter of time before these pages are also removed from the Google index without requiring you to submit URL removals in Google Webmaster tools.

Sometimes 404 page are indexed in the results page and not all of these error message is bad because its either the users misspell the URL or the the page doesn't exist.

For #SEO purposes do you think it's better to return 404 header or redirect to some page?
