Yes, sitemap is very important, it ensures that all the URLs will get picked up by search engines. Without the sitemap search engine will have hard time discovering and indexing website.

A search engine will discover you regardless of having a sitemap or not. A good bot will crawl a URL regardless of a sitemap or not.

A sitemap is a page or pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for Web design, or a Web page that lists the pages on a Web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. There are two versions of a sitemaps, XML Sitemap are a structured format that a enduser doesn't need to see, but it tells the search engine about the pages in your site, their relative importance to each other, and how often they are updated. HTML sitemaps are designed mainly for the user to enable them find content on your site, and don't need to include each and every subpage. This helps endusers and good search bots find pages on your site.

I disagree. The only way a crawler would know you have a sitemap is if you submit it or after its first crawl. So time and length of it being crawled are not really factors in that manner.

Crawlers by nature are looking for sites not submitted and so on. That is their job, well part of it. GB will find you quickly regardless.

Sitemaps are two types

HTML Sitemap
XML Sitemap

HTML sitemap is for the user to find the web pages available on the website
The XML sitemap is for the search engines to crawl the entire website.

Sitemaps have 3 purposes.

Visual Sitemaps for Project Planning / Communication
HTML for website visitors
XML sitemaps for search engines

If you use a sitemap generator like DYNO Mapper (http://www.dynomapper.com), it will create a sitemap for your website for all of the above situations and will publish using the best practices outlined in http://sitemaps.org. You can create a sitemap using the sitemap editor or you can create a sitemap by just entering a URL. The sitemap generator will get all the information and format it so it can be submitted to your search engines, placed on your website for users, or use the shareable sitemap for collaboration.

Good luck to you,
