I personalty think it doesn't make sense because if I want to rank for the keyword " make money online" why would a website that already ranks high on Google give me a backlink.

Of course, this is how Google ranking works. To increase you page rank you need to get a backlink from the website that rank high for the same keyword your site ranks low.
