How this tag is effective for ecommerce site?

meta name="robots" content="index, dofollow"

Is it necessary to include on home page (I have robots(.)txt file on server and I don't block any user agent).

If Google doesn't encounter this:

PHP Code:
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"

It automatically assumes that it means:

PHP Code:
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW"

By the fault all pages are dofollow and do index unless you specify some other thing!

The Robots meta tag, when used effectively, will tell the search engine spiders whether or not to index and follow a particular page.

Meta robots tag is a tag that tells search engines what to follow and what not to follow. It is a piece of code in the <head> section of your webpage. It’s a simple code that gives you the power to decide about what pages you want to hide from search engine crawlers and what pages you want them to index and look at.

Your metatag snippet is unnecessarily because robots by default will follow and index unless you state the opposite or other thing.

The robots meta tag allows you to implement a granular, page-specific method to managing how a person page should be indexed and offered to users in search engine results.

In a nutshell. You can use a special HTML <META> tag to tell robots not to index the content of a page, and or not scan it links to follow.
For example:
<html>
<head>
<title>.....</title>
<META NAME = "ROBOTS" CONTENT = "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">
</head>
</html>

The robots meta tag lets you utilize a granular, page-specific approach to controlling how an individual page should be indexed and served to users in search results.

There is no need to add (meta name="robots" content="index, dofollow") tag because by default Google follows all links on page, suppose if you want to stop indexing or crawling of a page in that case you can use..this tag--
meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow"
meta name="robots" content="index, nofollow"
meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"
