The theory behind ranking your videos on youtube is actually quite easy. There are some straight forward principles that most uploaders don't apply which makes to hard for their videos to ever get found.
It breaks down into two key factors.
Video Optimisation and Engagement Metrics.
This refers to the information you give youtube about your video when you are uploading it. This includes video title, description, tags, thumbnail, subtitles, cards/annotations etc.
Use each of these as best you can to tell youtube what your video is about. Make sure you have your keyword in your title and that you write a description that is at least 200 words long.
If you spend some time optimising these fields you are already a few steps ahead of most other videos. Youtube now has the information it needs to decide what topic/keyword your video is about.
This is a great start! However, anyone who stops here is only telling you half of the story.
Now youtube needs to decide whether your video is the BEST video on that topic/keyword.
It does this using engagement metrics.
Engagement Metrics is data that indicates how much viewers enjoy your video (how engaged they are).
- Average video watch time
- subscribes after watching
- social shares
- favourites (how many people favourite your video)
As you can see creators have incentive to create high value videos and to share those videos with the right audience.
I have created a checklist for creating and optimising videos videos to rank high on youtube.
