compress everything you can, server side, client side, code wise. Minimize external calls, serv all optimized images from a cookie-less domain, such as a CDN. Make sure you code base is as up to date as possible, meaning you are actually updating things as the language changes, like removing depreciated things and so on. Get a better hosting company or plan, get off shared hosting.

Use an image compressor.

External calls would be anything called from another site, multiple css files, multiple js files and so on.

Check your HTML code for dead links! I mean maybe you have a link in your code that links to a file that doesn't exist this increases site load time a lot!
