Full form of SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. It is a standard security technology for making an encrypted link between a web browser and web server.

Google has encouraged all sites to secure visitor information with SSL Certificates. That means that whether the Website collects personal information or not, Google will reward sites with SSL Certificates with a boost in search ranking.

Google hates scam and spam. Security is the top priority so it is understandable why they provide extra boost in ranking for sites employing SSL.

Anyone planning to install ssl for the sake of Google giving importance for ssl sites. I will recommend them, don't go for it unless
*Your website involves money transactions i,e online payment gateway
*your website involves maintaining secured data Ex: banking, storing user bank info..etc

If your website do not fall under above categories. Do not choose ssl, There are so many disadvantages if you choose, below are some disadvantages
1)increases your page load time
2)your website will not open (throws a security warning for users) if the time and date settings are wrong on the desktop

Yes agreed with vijay, I saw a lot of people flock to ssl after Google recommended it. And it was silly because https sites don't rank any higher than non-https sites - just do a google search for non-transactional websites (e.g. information sites not ecommerce).

Google announced that they are starting to use HTTPS/SSL as a “lightweight” ranking signal within their Google search algorithm. Google stated that this factor would only impact “fewer than 1% of global search queries.” However, they did say that they may decide to strengthen the HTTPS ranking signal over time, presumably after giving webmasters the opportunity to switch their websites over to HTTPS.
