Are you talking about thread prefixes? ACP > Configurations > Thread Prefixes > Click on "Add New Thread Prefix" tab

What character limit are we discussing here? You can create Thread Prefix with only one character.

What code are you trying to put there? There is a reason it's doing that? You simply need to put there something like this:
Code:
<span style="color: gray; font-weight: bold; font-size: 13px;">THREAD_PREFIX</span>

for example I put this code :
Code:
<span style="font: 11px Tahoma; color: #fff; background: linear-gradient(135deg, rgb(245, 105, 12) 0%, rgb(245, 174, 118) 50%, rgb(245, 105, 12) 50%, rgb(245, 105, 12) 100%) repeat scroll 0% 0% transparent; padding: 0 5px 2px 5px; border-radius: 3px; font-weight: bold; opacity: 0.8;">Thread Prefix</span>

mybb will limit it

I think we can make it work using CSS class or ID.

CSS add to you global.css
Code:
.thread_prefix {
    background: linear-gradient(135deg, rgb(245, 105, 12) 0%, rgb(245, 174, 118) 50%, rgb(245, 105, 12) 50%, rgb(245, 105, 12) 100%) repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
    border-radius: 3px;
    color: #fff;
    font: bold 11px Tahoma;
    opacity: 0.8;
    padding: 0 5px 2px;
}

Now we can use this for style display Smile
Code:
<span class="thread_prefix">THREAD_PREFIX</span>
